According to the family history, the Cells family has some link to the Blair Atholl area of Perthshire, including Blair Atholl - famous for Blair Castle, Killiecrankie, Calvine, Bruar and Struan.

Apparently, the surname Cells was taken from the predecessor Murray-Cells, which was Murray before that. We have no record or evidence of this other than family lore, and the fact that almost all the Cells males carry Murray as a second name.

According to family lore, the Cells family arrived in South Africa around 1840 (the 1840 Settlers?) from Scotland. Apparently, Robert Murray Cells of Glenluce, Scotland, and wife Johanna Murray Cells (nee Burns) of Dublin, Ireland, emigrated to South Africa. Nothing is known of the ancestors of Robert and Johanna Cells, hence this project. This project is also to build the family tree of the Cells families in South Africa, who are all blood-related in South Africa.
